FiT WORK #19 - THE CONCUSSION PLAYBOOK

DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD

If you happen to be watch football, you may have seen players being escorted off the football field and into the locker room. They are usually taken out of the football game after attempting to make a tackle, or being tackled, hitting the ground hard, and often temporarily losing consciousness. In order to avoid further injury, they are not allowed to return to the game, and instead have to undergo medical testing to properly diagnose the severity of a possible concussion.

Sometimes a player does not lose consciousness and may not appear as hurt initially. In a recent game the wide receiver was viciously tackled after catching a pass across the middle of the football field. After the catch, he jogged a few steps then stumbled to the ground, appearing disoriented. However, he stayed in the game and later when he ran out for another pass, he dropped it, and he fell to the ground. Then, rather than quickly getting up, he took a long time to stand and walk back to the huddle.

These are two prime examples of what to do, and what not to do, when you suspect that you, a teammate, or a friend or family member has suffered a concussion. Since concussions don't just happen in football, or even while playing sports, it's important to know the symptoms, who you can ask for help, and what to do in order to properly recover and heal.
