FiT Work #23 - Underage Drinking and Substance Abuse

DUE AT THE END OF THE CLASS PERIOD

UNDERAGE DRINKING

Alcohol use by persons under age 21 is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks. On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers.

HOW SUBSTANCE USE AFFECTS TEENS' HEALTH

Substance use can lead to long-term social and health problems, injury, and even death. Growth and development can be affected by tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Teens who abuse these substances may have trouble finding their identity, building relationship skills, and becoming emotionally stable. They also may have trouble preparing for their future. Substance abuse can affect memory and learning, which can harm a teen's schoolwork.  And substance use can grow very quickly from experimenting, or occasional use, to abuse and addiction in teens at risk
Understanding the Dangers

Studies show that educating teens on the dangers of alcohol and drugs have helped lower the rates of teen use over the past few years.  Click on the following link to learn more about Drugs and Your Body.  Be sure to read all the categories by clicking on all of the topics (Brain, Skin, Lungs, Mouth, Heart, and Death).

FiT Work 21 - Safety in the Water

Fit Work #21 Safety in the Water

Due at the end of the period.

Over 6,000 people drown every year in the United States. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-14. Most drownings involve young people who are swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, scuba diving, or surfing.

If you enjoy these activities, the sensible course of action is to learn about safety in the water. The most important rule to remember regarding water is to learn how to swim well! This is an important precaution for all water sports and recreational activities near the water.

The American Red Cross suggests additional water rules and safety tips. Their advice includes the following:
-swim outdoors only when water temperature will not chill your body
-know the depth of the water that you are swimming in
-do not swim help a drowning person unless you have special training
-learn how to handle a boat, kayak, or canoe correctly
-use equipment that is in good condition
-be careful of deep or fast currents when wading in rivers or streams

Swimming and water sports can be very enjoyable activities as long as safety rules and procedures are followed. Don’t try to do more in the water than your skill or fitness level allow you to do. And remember . . . NEVER SWIM ALONE!

FitnessGram is a fitness assessment and reporting program for youth, first developed by the Cooper Institute in response to the need for a comprehensive set of assessment procedures in physical education programs. The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests. Scores from these assessments are compared to healthy fitness zone standards to determine students’ overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate.

The healthy fitness zone standards are not based on class averages or any other peer comparisons. They are what is called criterion-referenced standards that are based on recommended levels of fitness needed for good health. The standards are set specifically for boys and girls of various ages using the best available research. FiT WORK #19 - THE CONCUSSION PLAYBOOK

DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD

If you happen to be watch football, you may have seen players being escorted off the football field and into the locker room. They are usually taken out of the football game after attempting to make a tackle, or being tackled, hitting the ground hard, and often temporarily losing consciousness. In order to avoid further injury, they are not allowed to return to the game, and instead have to undergo medical testing to properly diagnose the severity of a possible concussion.

Sometimes a player does not lose consciousness and may not appear as hurt initially. In a recent game the wide receiver was viciously tackled after catching a pass across the middle of the football field. After the catch, he jogged a few steps then stumbled to the ground, appearing disoriented. However, he stayed in the game and later when he ran out for another pass, he dropped it, and he fell to the ground. Then, rather than quickly getting up, he took a long time to stand and walk back to the huddle.

These are two prime examples of what to do, and what not to do, when you suspect that you, a teammate, or a friend or family member has suffered a concussion. Since concussions don't just happen in football, or even while playing sports, it's important to know the symptoms, who you can ask for help, and what to do in order to properly recover and heal. Click HERE to watch a video and find out more about concussions.
